FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

Below you will find questions that we are commonly asked about in relation to funerals, but there are many more things you may wish to know, so please don't hesitate to contact us with your queries.

Is a Funeral or Memorial Service Always Held in a Funeral Home or Place of Worship?

A service can usually be held at any location that family and friends feel would be comfortable and appropriate. Our funeral directors can assist with arranging a meaningful service for you.

What is Meant By the Term "Viewing"?

This means that the coffin is open so mourners can see the body of the deceased. Viewing the body of a relative or friend who has died is something many people find helpful, and it can be an important part of grieving.

The funeral director can provide private rooms for viewing, or will arrange for the body to be taken home or to a marae

May the Family Choose the Casket?

Yes. As FDANZ members we offer a range of different styles at varying prices. We have a casket room at our Aoraki Funeral Home where you can view a selection. Your choice can weigh up what you can afford, what you perceive as practical and also what would be a fitting tribute to the deceased.

What Happens to the Casket if a Person is Cremated?

The casket is cremated too. Cremation procedures are laid down by law in New Zealand.

Who Chooses Between Burial or Cremation?

When the wishes of the deceased are made in writing they are generally followed. If they are not known then it usually becomes the decision of the executor and/or family.

How Much Does a Funeral Cost?

A funeral, like any other service, can have a range of prices depending on the provider. It is similar to asking "How much does a wedding cost?" Funeral costs are basically divided into two categories: services, as provided by the funeral director and funeral home staff; and merchandise, such as caskets, outer burial containers, urns, etc. With Aoraki Funeral Homes we can also provide caskets, engraving, headstones and monumental plaques.

Do Aoraki Funeral Homes Provide a Cost Estimate?

As members of the Funeral Directors Association of New Zealand we can provide cost estimates without any obligation.

Should Children Attend Funerals?

Everyone in the family is affected when someone dies. Dealing with the death of someone close is hard at any age. Although they may express it differently, children and teenagers grieve for the loss too. Aoraki Funeral Homes can provide you with free reading material that may help you make a difference and help them to cope, but the choice of whether to attend a funeral service or not should be left up to the child.

Is Embalming Necessary?

Modern embalming's main function is to ensure disinfection and preservation during the funeral period and is therefore necessary. If family or close ones wish to spend time with the deceased embalming also ensures a more natural appearance, and is especially important if transportation or repatriation is involved.

Aoraki Funeral Homes has a professionally qualified embalmer thereby ensuring high standards are maintained.

Can We Spend Time With the Deceased?

Aoraki Funeral Home's funeral directors know from experience that many people who are hesitant at first, later say how much they are helped in the grieving process by spending some time with the deceased prior to the funeral.

For many people effective grieving cannot take place until they have accepted that someone has died. Spending time with the deceased certainly helps this acceptance, particularly when death has been sudden or unexpected.

What Happens if Someone Close to Me Dies Away From Home?

After the death has occurred, the most prudent decision would be to call your funeral service. Your funeral director will be able to make the necessary arrangements to transfer the deceased, relieving the family of the burden of dealing with unfamiliar people, places and related issues

Must an Obituary be Published in a Newspaper?

The publication of an obituary notice is a matter of your personal choice. While most newspapers control the editorial format, you have the right to limit the amount of information, if any provided to them.
